The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation’s Hong Kong Island Flag Day 2021 took place on 27 November 2021. It is our first flag selling on the street since 2018. Thanks to the support from the community, over 1,500 volunteers from various corporates, educational bodies, self-help groups and social welfare organisations were recruited to volunteer in this event. Among the volunteers, there were also kindergarten, primary and secondary students, as well as people with disabilities, chronic illnesses and the elderly with rehabilitation needs.

The funds of $880,000 HKD raised will be allocated to supporting and developing our services to help people with disabilities or chronic illnesses re-integrate into society and live a more fulfilling life.

Heart-touching Stories from Flag Day

At about 10 o’clock in the morning, a volunteer, who was a lady in her 80s returned to the flag station with her hands full carrying a weighty flag bag. The station manager asked her for some tips of selling flags on the street, and the lady said the following – “Whenever I greet a passer-by, I’d put a smile on my face and express my wish for good health to them. I believe a kind gesture as such can already warm people’s heart in a hectic life. Although I am in my 80s, I still wish to render my help to people. We should let those contribute in the way they want, “said the volunteer.

The volunteers started returning to flag stations with their hefty flag bags at noon, sharing their joy with staff at the station. Despite just a glimpse in an eye, warmth and care were unwittingly spreading around. There were quite a number of kindergarteners or primary students who came along with their parents, who thought volunteering can not only strengthen parent-child relationship, but such good deeds can turn into good virtues. “We were all contented and honoured to volunteer for The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation. When we saw people give away a $500 banknote without hesitation, we were deeply touched.”

What the flag bags contained were not just banknotes or coins, but rather an abundance of love and wishes. We are grateful for the help rendered by the volunteers and other donors, which led to much success for the event.

Although Flag Day has come to an end, you can still support the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation with an online donation. The funds raised will be allocated to supporting and developing various rehabilitation services under the Society to help people with disabilities or chronic illnesses re-integrate into society and live a more fulfilling life.
