In 2015, 33-year-old teacher CHOI Kin-shing (Ah-Shing), like many young adults at his age, was striving hard towards career success. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. Ah-Shing was attacked by a stroke one day in school that left the left side of his body paralysed. There were many things yet to be done when he was at the height of his career, but eventually he had to begin his rehabilitation journey.

Finding Hope in Times of Uncertainty

Ah-Shing bitterly suffered since he had been admitted to the hospital. At first he was infected with hand-foot-mouth disease. The pain caused by mouth ulcers stopped him from swallowing saliva properly. After he was healed, he undertook a series of rehabilitation treatments every day like an army training. He could not drink a mouthful of water. Not only did he feel painful and weary, he was also overwhelmed by helplessness and melancholy with tears streaming down his face many times.

Later Ah-Shing learned about the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation. After evaluating his physical conditions, our therapist devised a set of rehabilitation exercises and set up recovery goals for him to help him resume his ordinary life soon through community life skills training. With the assistance provided by the Society, Ah-Shing’s physical mobility significantly improved. Initially, he could only get out of home relying on Rehabus, but he can now visit the Society on foot. Ah-Shing added that the interactions and conversations with our therapist had given him a sense of security to make him more confident in facing up to the challenges of brain attack.

Overcoming Physical Disability, Achieving Unlimited Possibilities

With the full support rendered by the Society, Ah-Shing resumed his teaching career on campus a year after his illness. He even challenged himself and participated in running a 10-km race in a marathon. Besides, Ah-Shing was determined to become a scholar while he was in University. In the future, he would plan to complete a doctoral programme in Taiwan and embark on a next adventure in his life at all costs.
