When it comes to fun destinations, Leslie can always talk endlessly, little does he sound like someone in their sixties. Despite being a passionate traveller, three years ago, his knees started to experience occasional pain, and he even had to go down stairs backwards. It was almost time for him to consider getting an artificial joint. Luckily, Leslie knew how to find a way out and embarked on a fulfilling journey of life.
“The psychosocial program I attended last year helped me understand acceptance and commitment, and I applied those principles when my knees worsened a few months ago. When the orthopedic doctor suggested getting an artificial joint, I couldn’t accept it. However, two days later, I reminded myself to step back and observe the situation from a bystander’s perspective. I started accepting the fact that my knees weren’t functioning well and stopped focusing on the emotions. Instead, I sought different treatment options by consulting more doctors and talking to patients with similar experiences. Eventually, I discovered that it wasn’t the most suitable solution for me. I sought other doctors who taught me to use my muscles for walking and to use a cane when necessary. In early January, my wife and I went to New Zealand for cave exploration. All the fellow companions were young people, but I wasn’t afraid at all. I bought hiking poles, learned how to use my muscles, and asked the instructor many questions. Even when there was a cliff nearby, I remained confident. Even if the knee problem couldn’t be solved, being able to step out of my comfort zone, not letting emotions control me, and doing things I never thought I would do, makes me truly happy.”
Giving oneself time to reflect and gradually explore different possibilities is Leslie’s key to overcoming obstacles. The path may be challenging, but he firmly believes it’s not a dead-end. In the process of learning while trying, he has opened up new paths in his life, adding more colours to it. The pain in his knees is an unchangeable fact, and Leslie has learned to accept it. Even so, he is determined in not letting his life be limited to this physical restriction. His next destination will be a self-driving trip in Europe. Adventures out there await this brave fellow.
