What’s New
The project “Strengthening a Rehabilitation Service System for Persons with Rehabilitation Needs in Yushu Prefecture” supported by The Kadoorie Charitable Foundation was launched in June 2020. Our team has developed various training activities, including courses, placements, and online case discussions for different administration levels of the province. Our students benefited from the train-the-trainer model (ToT) from the provincial level would also teach in the training activities of other administration levels.
Summer is the most suitable season to travel to Yushu and our teaching team, along with ToT students, would travel to Chengduo and Zaduo, to run onsite training at hospitals. The team would also make visits to different towns and villages and provide home rehabilitation training programmes. The National Centre for Women and Children’s Health and The Health Commission of Qinghai Province would conduct supervision annually for hospitals of the two counties.
The team was encouraged to witness the improvement of our students in clinical reasoning. This has enabled them to identify the critical issues of the patients and to design a more appropriate training programme for the patients.
Our team filmed a series of teaching videos about Arthritis, the most common chronic illness in Yushu. We will film 2 more series of teaching videos on stroke and cerebral palsy for our students.

We partner with many Mainland organizations, including The China Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, the China Disabled Persons’ Federation and other welfare institutes to co-organize lots of rehabilitation training courses, workshops and on-line study programmes for rehabilitation nurses, doctors, therapists and teachers from public health, social welfare and education sectors. We aim at enhancing their service quality in rehabilitation and abilities in teaching, as well as supporting and encouraging our trainees to organize continuing education programmes in the local areas. When the East meets the West
It is visible that religion has had a profound impact in the Qinghai province and the Tibetan-populated areas, where people there may opt for religion over science. This explained why patients may refuse to receive rehab treatment. These successful cases are the most effective publicity tools for departments that provide rehabilitation services.
Traveling from the north to the south
Our work cannot be carried on without the continuous support from our long term volunteers. The person who came to my mind first was Tony Yang Hongkai when I knew I have to find a volunteer to share the stories.
The Elder Brother
Prior to retirement, Dr. Zhou Yuxian is the head of Orthopedic and Trauma (orthopedic) Department of Tuen Mun Hospital in Hong Kong and plays an important role in our volunteer service.
Passing the Torch
Prior to retirement, Dr. Lin Guohui is the director of Rehabilitation Department of Guangzhou Disabled Rehabilitation Centre, and registered occupational therapist in Hong Kong.
The ageing population is a global trend. The World Population Prospects 2019 predicts that 1 out of 11 people will be over 65 in 2050. In 2020, 73% of all deaths will be chronic illness-induced and 60% of the global burden of disease. Moreover, 79% of the deaths attributed to these illnesses occurs in development countries. Four of the most prominent chronic illnesses – cardiovascular diseases (CVD), cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and type 2 diabetes.
Many chronic illnesses do not have definite curative measures. Medical team and patients are in long-term collaboration, and each member has their role in the team. Medications will not be the only solution to the patient’s daily problem, while the impact on their daily life in different aspects: role changes, emotional and health conditions, have to be considered.
The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation has been promoting chronic disease self-management programmes since the 1990s. Our approach includes group or 1 on 1 therapy, website, mobile APP. In our services, participants could enhance their knowledge in chronic illnesses and how to manage the difficulties in daily life because of the chronic illnesses. The topics of our training include making action plans, problem-solving, exercises and healthy eating.
We provide training for leading the chronic disease self-management groups. We have provided training in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Chengdu, Chongqing, Conghua, Shenzhen and Guangzhou to medical doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers, community workers, CDC staff, and volunteers with chronic illnesses. The trainees will lead small groups in the community for patients and carers. We also provide seminars on the theory of self-management.
