ZHOU Hongmei, Rehabilitation Therapist

I had a below-the-knee amputation of my left leg after the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008. By that time, I connected with rehabilitation and later became a rehabilitation therapist. I joined Sichuan Yang Kang Rehabilitation Resource Centre (Yang Kang Centre) in 2018 after graduation from university and serve children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

At the beginning, I was confused because I did not know how to get along with children with ASD and their parents.  Fortunately, I learned a great deal from the staff of the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation and the Yang Kang Centre, who supervised me along the way During these 4 years, I grew stumblingly as a professional but have accumulated sufficient experience.

I am blessed to be able to do something I like in my career, and I hope that I could serve more children with ASD and their families with my professionalism.

The patient that truly left an impression on me during my tenure was a 2-year-old boy with ASD whom I met 4 years ago. He had severe behavioral and emotional problems and loved to lie on the floor and hit his head. He had difficulty communicating with people, and therefore, his mother also showed negative emotions. After 4 years of intensive training, the boy is able to control his emotions and communicate with others, and he could participate in small group activities.  His improvement was a strong evidence of the enhancement of my skills.

I am blessed to be able to do something I like in my career, and I hope that I could serve more children with ASD and their families with my professionalism.
